ONA-HA ITTO RYU
HISTORY
Ono-haItto-ryuisatraditionalJapanesemartialartcenteredontheswordthatoriginated400yearsagoduringJapan’s
WarringStatesperiod.Thewarrior,ItoIttosaiKagehisa,createdtheschoolafterengaginginnumerousduelstothedeath
andcomingtotherealizationthatthemind,body,andswordmustactasone.Hepassedtheschooltohissuccessor,
OnoJiroemonTadaaki,whogainedsuchafearsomereputationthathewasrecruitedbyJapan’smostfamousshogun,
TokugawaIeyasu,tobehispersonalguardandteacher.AlongwithYagyuMunenorioftheYagyuShinkage-ryu,
TadaakiservedasanofficialinstructorofkenjutsutotheTokugawaShogunate.Overtheinterveningcenturies,
Ono-haItto-ryubecameknownforitspracticalityandeffectivenessandexertedamajorinfluenceonthe
developmentofthemodernsportofkendo.
CURRICULUM
Students practice in pairs,usingawoodenswordandthickprotectivegautletsuniquetothissystem calledonigotetoensurea
realisticandsafetrainingenvironment.Thistypeofpracticeallowsstudentstolearnproperdistanceandtimingandother
essentialskillsforbothoffenseanddefense.Studentsstartwithbasicmovementsandprogresstomoreadvancedtechniques
astheydeveloptheirabilitiesandunderstanding.Seniorstudentspracticewithasteelswordwithabluntededgecallhabiki
thatprovidesevenmorerealism.

MarkHague’smartialartscareerhasspannedover42years,19ofwhichinJapan,andheholdsdanrankingsinseveralstyles
ofkarateandaiki-jujitsu.HestartedtraininginOno-haItto-ryuintheReigakudounderSasamoriTakemiin2002andwasawarded
theKanalicensein2009.HecontinuestopracticeOno-haItto-ryuunderthecurrentsoke,YabukiYuji.Asacertifiedinstructor
oftheOno-haItto-ryuAmericaBranch,heteachesOno-haItto-ryuonbehalfoftheReigakudoinclasses,seminars,and
demonstrationsintheUnitedStates,Europe,andJapan.
